April 17, 2017- DAC Meeting Notice

Design Advisory Committee April 2017

Please provide your thoughts or comments on the following sign applications. You can email me or give me a call at 303-65-8483.

Central Presbyterian Church (Central Longmont):  They are proposing a freestanding monument sign at the southwest corner of the building. It is made of iron, painted black with 4 sign panels.  The bottom left panel has changeable copy.  The sign will be up-lit via landscape spot lights.  The sign is 6’ 10 5/8” tall and 9’ 11” wide.  View .pdf document for Central Presbyterian Church sign design & request.

Questions:

  1. Does the sign design fit with the historic character of the church?
  2. Does the removable copy easily integrate into the sign?
  3. Any comments on the sign materials or colors?
  4. Any comments on the sign layout or graphic design?
  5. Would you recommend approval of this sign with or without conditions?

622 Main St. (Little Dog & LoCo SkateShop): This building houses three businesses, Little Dog Pipe and Tobacco, Electric Tattoo and LoCo Skate Shop.  Jim Stone owns both Little Dog and LoCo Skate Shop.  He is proposing three new signs.  This .pdf document shows the sign design, sizes and placement on the building.

Wall Sign: Painted wall sign on the south building face.  This sign will replace the existing billboard on the Dairy Queen side (photo below).  Although it is no longer allowable under today’s sign standards, a variance was granted in the 70s to allow a billboard sign on this wall front.  They are proposing removing all the signs and the plywood billboard from the wall and painting the proposed sign directly on the brick.

Projecting Blade Sign: The LoCo Skate Shop is proposing using the existing metal sign bracket (photo below) for a blade sign made of routed wood, resembling a long board.

Wall Sign (Main St.): The LoCo Skate Shop is also proposing a wall sign in the white, rectangular-shaped opening next to (left of) the blade sign.  (photo below).  It would be vinyl on plastic.

Questions:

  1. Two signs are proposed for LoCo Skate Shop.  Only one wall sign allowed by the sign code without a modification.  Should both signs be considered?  If only one, which sign is preferred?
  2. Any comments on the sign materials or colors?
  3. Any comments on the sign layout or graphic design?
  4. Would you recommend approval of these signs with or without conditions?

Longtucky Spirits (350 Terry St.): The owners of Longtucky Spirits are proposing awnings and a projecting blade sign for its business in the 350 Terry Professional Building (former Times Call Bldg.)  We had previously approved a master sign plan for this building that did not include these signs.  The attached proposal is a more comprehensive signage package for the business, but at this time they are only proposing:

Awning signs on the north and east sides of the building.  (In the .pdf document, see page 3 for awning layout – cloth will be sunbrella fabric) NOTE: They are not currently proposing the vinyl wall sign, the address sign or the St. Vrain Cidery sign (although could in the future)

Projecting Blade sign (In the .pdf document, see page 7 for sign placement). They have chosen concept 2 (Brushed copper sub) on page 9.  Page 11 shows the dimension of each of the awning signs.

Question:

  1. Should we consider amending the previously approved Master Sign Plan to allow these signs?

In a copy of an e-mail, provided by the applicant, the property owner stated: "The signs you want for your business are fine if you get approval." He stated that the building as a whole can be discussed as a later date (they proposed resembling their scheme around the whole building), but after all the work they put in, he wasn't sure they wanted to change.  He also indicated that he prefers the back lit signs. The applicant indicated “We are focused on our portion of the building signage. However, a petition to the landlord and an updated Master Signage Plan is in the works.”

More Questions:

  1. Are the awnings signs appropriate?
  2. Is the projecting sign appropriate?
  3. Any comments on sign materials or colors?
  4. Any comments on sign layout or graphic design?
