Full article:

Daisy the dog is unhappy, and it's easy to see why: a little over a year ago, she was plucked from her farm on the high plains of eastern Colorado, where she'd reigned over 320-acres of prairie, and relocated to a fenced-in back yard in Longmont.

Daisy Dog Press is over the moon, and it's easy to see why: one year ago, the independent publisher bade goodbye to its childhood home a few miles outside of a vanishingly small town called Joes and found refuge in the metropolis (relatively-speaking) of Longmont, Colorado.

"Sorry, Daisy," says Gregory Hill, novelist and founder of his pup's namesake press. "I loved the farm, too. But the folks back home...things are really screwed up."

Skeptical, Daisy tilts her head and barks for an apple slice.

Daisy's loss is Longmont's gain.

Hill's four novels, including The Strattford County Trilogy, have netted numerous plaudits, including the Colorado Book Award and glowing reviews from the likes of Lev Grossman and Publisher's Weekly.

Daisy Dog Press arose from Hill's desire to help first-time novelists feel the thrill of holding a copy of their own work without enduring the inevitable slog of queries and rejections. To that end, the submission process is...unconventional. Hopeful authors must clear just two hurdles.
"If you've written your first novel and if you've been in my living room, I will publish you."

That's it?

"You also have to be willing to become a better writer."

Hill directs authors thru the entire process of publication, from initial formatting, the terror of copy-edits ("Soul-crushing honesty, with liberal doses of encouragement"), to the cover art and distribution.

One assumes the results would be mixed.

Hill shrugs. "Some Daisy Dog books are excellent, but all of them are wonderful."

Daisy Dog Press took a major turn in 2021 when Hill parted ways with his latest publisher--his fourth in four books--and found himself look for a press that could keep its promises. The answer was right there in his living room. In 2022, Hill released all four of his novels on Daisy Dog Press. He regrets only that it took him so long to take the leap. "I'm a big fan of my work."

Daisy Dog Press is perfectly willing to work with more experienced writers. "You never know who's gonna show up in my living room," says Hill. One of his recent house guests was Zach Boddicker.

"Zach's probably best-known from his time in the Fort Collins alt-country band Drag the River, but his writing is every bit as excellent as his musicianship. And his book-readings are glorious."

Boddicker has published two novels with Daisy Dog Press. His latest, The Shih-Tsu, which Hill describes as "a masterpiece of wry wisdom and controlled chaos" came out earlier this year.

Zach Boddicker and Gregory Hill will join forces for a "shambolic reading/impromptu county music concert" at Longmont's Vintology on April 18 from 6-8 pm.

Hill concludes, "I try to make it clear to everyone that there's no money to be had in this racket, certainly not in 2026, but you can be rich in coin of the spirit. It won't pay the bills, but it can save you a fortune on mental health expenses."

And even though their namesake pet is grumpy, Daisy Dog Press is happy to return to civilization.
