Meet your instructor- Xuri Walton

Xuri Walton is a student at Niwot High School whose art has placed in multiple competitions (Scholastic Art and Writing and A Call To Men Art Competition), and has been commissioned to create large-scale artwork multiple times. She enjoys portraiture and mixed media, and explores themes of race, assimilation, and feminism and womanhood within her artwork.

As an artist, my point of view stems from my identity, my experiences, and the social issues I observe. When I paint (or create art in general), expressing myself feels seamless as opposed to feeling out-of-reach. I contemplate my personal experiences to produce art, because they inspire me. I’m a Black girl; I’ve grown up in predominantly White areas; I’ve traveled enough to note the massive differences between different communities, and I have an innate desire to understand the societal structures of the world around me. I have processed my joy, pain, and confusion to emphasize my artistic expression as an individual.
