Working within commercial art, concept illustration, and specialized fabrication, artists like Rob Birt often utilize a deep understanding of materials to translate two-dimensional sketches into tangible, three-dimensional physical objects. In the realm of specialty props and mask making, this transition requires mastering a sequential chemical and sculptural process to capture fine details, ensure wearer safety, and produce durable finished products.
He will demonstrate mold making for masks using alginate, silicone, latex, plaster, and fiberglass. Each material plays a distinct role in capturing fine textural details, ensuring flexibility, or providing structural rigidity for the final piece.
