In observance of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), grassroots nonprofit Community Cares, Ltd. and local artist Joyanna Rose Gittings of Obra Arts will host a public celebration honoring the ancestors and loved ones who made our lives possible. So please join the business owners of the
Old Town Marketplace mini mall; 332 Main Street, for a night of Norteña music, food and drinks, face painting, and shared memories. Joyanna will unveil an art installation that transforms the mall’s atrium ceiling into a tribute to the monarch butterfly’s beauty, symbolism, and perseverance—from birth and metamorphosis to the multigenerational migration to and from Mexico.
Beginning October 10th, attendees are invited to bring photographs of loved ones who have passed on. Joyanna will include them in the community ofreñda (altar) created for the celebration.
Chico Arellanes created a digital program to be hosted on Community Cares’ website for the memorial project, “Mariposas de la Memoria” (Butterflies of Memory). The program creates a digital memorial for individuals, families, or beloved pets. Memorial donors can access the file through password protection or choose to share it publicly for viewing only. Each memorial will be represented at the mall’s entrance by a monarch butterfly and a QR code for the public files.
