Placemaking & Public Spaces

The Longmont Downtown Development Authority (LDDA) commissioned both a Placemaking Plan and a Wayfinding Plan as part of our broader Downtown Master Plan of Development. These plans laid the groundwork for creating a more connected, people-focused district—where public spaces feel vibrant, walkable, and uniquely Longmont. Over the past several years, we've steadily brought these ideas to life through projects that improve the way our district looks, feels, and functions.

Public Spaces that Encourage Connection

Public spaces in Downtown Longmont are more than just places to pass through. They were thoughtfully created as places to pause, connect, and enjoy the moment. From the cozy charm of St. Stephen’s Plaza to the colorful breezeways that lead to your next great find, each corner of downtown is designed to spark creativity and community.

We’re investing in infrastructure that makes these spaces even more inviting, like planters bursting with color, benches for conversation or people-watching, and lighting that adds safety and sparkle along Main Street. And we’re not stopping there. Lo-CoL Square, a former gas station site at 6th and Main, is being reimagined as a dynamic public plaza—a space built for events, performances, and everyday joy.

Placemaking with Purpose (and Personality)

Downtown Longmont doesn’t just install infrastructure, it adds personality to public space. Our placemaking work brings streets to life with bold murals, colorful banners, disco dumpsters (yes, really), informational kiosks, and lighting that sets the mood. Guided by our 2017 Plan of Development and our 5-year Strategic Action Plan, these enhancements make downtown more walkable, more connected, and way more fun. By creating spaces that make people feel special and welcome, visitors stay longer, and keep coming back.

Wayfinding That Welcomes

Downtown should be easy to love—and easy to navigate. That’s why the Longmont Downtown Development Authority teamed up with the City of Longmont to create a fresh Wayfinding Plan that curates a welcoming, connected experience across downtown and beyond.
Starting in 2023, we kicked off the first phase of the plan: adding colorful parking lot ID signs, eye-catching trailblazers, and upgraded kiosks to help everyone explore with ease.
