MUSEUM EXHIBIT PROMPTED LAND ACKNOWLEDGE STATEMENT

The "Longmont 150" exhibit at the Longmont Museum prompted the development of a Land Acknowledgement statement. In consultation with Montoya Whiteman (Cheyenne and Arapaho), the Museum spearheaded Longmont City Council’s adoption of the statement, which honors the ancestral land of the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Ute and other tribes.

JUSTIN VEACH, AUDITORIUM AND EVENTS MANAGER AT THE LONGMONT MUSEUM

Who are you?

I may not be the best person to answer this first question but I can tell you that I’m a third generation Angeleno (yes, another Californian) and a lifelong Laker fan. I’m also a veteran of the US Coast Guard where I discovered my love of poetry in an old Baltimore shipyard. In 1997 I followed the poet Allen Ginsberg to Naropa where I received a BA in Writing & Literature and Theater and then later an MFA in Critical Studies from CalArts. Once upon a time I realized my dream of opening an art gallery with my best friend (careful what you wish for). For some years I was a core member of a guerilla Butoh performance group and spent time as a public library evangelist raising awareness and support for the Los Angeles Public Library. I’m an arts and ideas guy, equally at home in an art gallery, literary venue or performance space. I love the unpredictable and surprising nature of putting people in conversation with each other and the sense of connection, recognition, and understanding that comes from good dialogue. I wholeheartedly believe in the transformational power of creativity. I serve as the President of the Boulder County Arts Alliance Board of Directors in addition to curating and producing panels, lectures, conversations and live performances for the Longmont Museum.

What are you up to?

I just put the finishing touches on our upcoming programming. Barring a Covid resurgence (please get vaccinated!) we’ll be offering up several programs soon. We teamed up with BIFF for evenings of film from this year’s festival as well as concerts and performances, including one this week with Motus Theater. And let’s not even get me started about our Friday Afternoon Concert Series or our big annual Holiday Show in December featuring Hazel Miller.

What do you want everyone to know?

The Longmont Museum is Boulder County’s largest museum and one of only five SCFD Tier Two organizations in the county.
